Smart Rabbit believes that we have the right to be free from fear in our home, in our community, and in our mind. Our Mission is to provide our students with training and tools to feel safe, to be safe, and to take control of their own lives.
ABOUT SMART RABBIT
Smart Rabbit Safety School started with the idea that we should all feel safe, and know how to be safe. Built on a unique foundation of training and experience, and a passion for the empowerment of others, Smart Rabbit exists to share with others the knowledge, skills, and peace of mind acquired through a career in education and public safety.
Smart Rabbit is dedicated to promoting safety and self-confidence in the people we serve. We educate and empower people through real-world training in situational awareness, conflict avoidance, and defense of home and self. Whether you are looking to learn about home security, to defend yourself from a threat, or just to feel safer and more confident walking down the street, Smart Rabbit will give you the tools to find the power inside you and to face your world without fear or anxiety.
What Smart Rabbit Can Offer You...
Smart Rabbit is committed to safety in all facets of life, and we are prepared to offer our participants skills, practices, and perspectives that they will be able to apply in everyday life, whether at work, at the grocery store, in the car, or at home.
Available classes include a one-day introduction to general safety concepts and strategies, a custom, two-day extensive exploration of multiple concepts to keep your whole family safe, a full eight-hour Concealed Pistol License (CPL) certification course that meets all Michigan standards required to apply for a CPL, and a half-day, intermediate shooting course, to improve skills and safety on the range and beyond. Smart Rabbit even offers individual, virtual consultations for broad or specific safety questions or concerns. See the "Courses Available" page for more information.
All attendees of these classes will acquire new ideas and abilities regarding safety, regardless of their prior training or experience. However, the primary objective of Smart Rabbit Safety School is the introduction of these concepts, and of a revolutionary way of seeing and approaching the world around us, to participants who have little to no experience in these areas.
For those who have long wondered about ways to feel and be safe, how to defend their home or themselves, or even whether carrying a firearm is right for them, Smart Rabbit Safety School is the answer!

Why is the rabbit smoking a pipe?
A traditional theme shared among the Wolastoqiyik Native American tribe was of the lynx, hunting the rabbit in the forest. Even while the rabbit was stalked by a predator, he sat in peace, smoking his pipe, secure in the knowledge of himself, his environment, and the threats within. Because of confidence in his ability to survive, unharmed, the rabbit was without fear.
I first heard of this theme in the 1997 movie"The Edge" (although the film's producers changed Wolastoqiyik to Cree and lynx to panther). I was inspired by the idea that we can achieve peace, even as danger lurks, if we possess knowledge - knowledge of ourselves and of our power to overcome.
When we understand the world around us, and we understand and embrace our ability to conquer the threats within that world, then we are free to live without fear. This lesson has led me to find peace in the face of threats and adversaries throughout my life, and it is what Smart Rabbit seeks to share with others.
ABOUT ME
Hi, I'm Nate, an educator and safety advocate,
and the founder of Smart Rabbit Safety School
After teaching public school for three years, I left the classroom to embark on a career in law enforcement, where I have proudly served as a police officer for more than 20 years. I am an instructor with the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES) and the Washtenaw County Community College Police Academy. I am also a certified Concealed Pistol License (CPL) instructor with the U.S. Concealed Carry Association (USCCA) and a certified Violent Critical Incident (VCI) Response instructor through ALICE Active Shooter Response Training. In addition to my experience as an instructor of police officers and law enforcement students, I have also been a coach, a tutor, a camp counselor, and a youth mentor. The education and empowerment of others have always been in my heart. I created Smart Rabbit Safety School because I want to share the knowledge that I have learned throughout my career with others: strategies to face everyday threats in a modern world, the freedom in overcoming fear, and a life of confidence, self-reliance, and peace of mind.
